COMPOSITION OF MATTER Atoms: units that make up all matter. Examples: carbon ( C ) iron ( Fe ) potassium ( K ) hydrogen ( H )

Composition of Matter Elements: take a look at the periodic table. If all the atoms in a sample of matter (anything that has mass and takes up space) have the same identity, that kind of matter is an element.

Periodic Table Metal – Anything that is to the left of the stair-step line. Nonmetal – Anything that is to the right of the stair-step line. Metalloid – Anything on the stair-step line processes both properties of a metal and nonmetal.

Compounds Compounds: made from atoms of two or more elements that are chemically combined. Examples H 2 O – Water NaCl – sodium chloride (salt)

SUBSTANCE Substance – either an element or a compound. Elements and compounds cannot be reduced to more basic components by physical processes. Composition definite.

Mixtures and Solutions Mixtures – A material made up of two or more substances that can be separated by physical means. Composition variable. Ex.) Salt water.

Solutions Solvent – that, which does the dissolving. Solute – that, which gets dissolved. An aqueous solution is any solution in which water is the solvent.

Two Types of Solutions Homogenous (uniformly spread out) mixture of two or more substances in a single state. Heterogeneous (not uniformly spread out) mixture of two or more substances that are unevenly distributed and can be identified.

Heterogeneous Suspensions – mixtures containing particles that settle out if left undisturbed. –Can be filtered Colloids – mixture containing intermediate sized particles that do not settle out. –Ex.) Milk, Paint, Fog

Tyndall Effect Scattering of light with the presence of the colloid.Scattering of light with the presence of the colloid. http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NaURE 8gTXqk&safety_mode=true&persist_safety _mode=1&safe=activehttp://www.youtube.com/watch?v=NaURE 8gTXqk&safety_mode=true&persist_safety _mode=1&safe=active
