3 Syllabus Read through the Syllabus tonight and email me any questions that you have Items of note: ■I recommend purchasing an AP Chemistry review book for you to keep at home ■You will need some form of lab notebook- a bound record of experiments. College admissions officers will sometimes ask to see your lab notebook in order to award credit ■There will be changes that need to occur to the details in the syllabus - I will try to keep you as up to date as possible! But lets all be flexible

18 Review Law of Definite Proportions ■A compound is always composed of the same elements at fixed proportions by mass Sample Problem: Sodium chloride, NaCl, contains 39% Na (sodium) and 61% Cl (chloride) by mass. If you have a 150-g sample of NaCl, how many grams of sodium and chloride are there in the sample? To check your answer, the sum of the total number of grams of sodium and chloride should be equal to 150 grams. Law of Multiple Proportions ■When two elements combine to form more than one compound, the mass of one element, which combines with a fixed mass of the other element, will always be ratios of whole numbers.
