2 How did the revolution exert power and influence over so many people, including the many educated and middle class people like Satrapi’s parents? --Guardians of the Revolution: responsible for survival of the regime. *work in the military, but also work domestically to ensure that there is no resistance, especially that of leftist and ethnic uprisings. “The scarf or a beating!” (Persepolis 1 76). In Persepolis 2 pg 134 (288 in complete version)-example of a young couple that got caught in public, so they attempted to lie and say they were cousins and ended up paying a huge fine.

3 How did the revolution exert power and influence over so many people, including the many educated and middle class people like Satrapi’s parents? :-- Fear and violence: Heavily dependent on fear and torture for the existence of the regime and justifying it with religion. “Meanwhile, executions at the rate of one every 25 minutes, unwarranted arrests and widespread torture continue unabated. If only for one week the amount of freedom existed as during the Shah's despotic rule, the people of Iran would arise and depose Khomeini as they did the Shah” -culturalsurvival.org “...We’ve gone from 3000 prisoners under the Shah to 300,000 under [the Islamic] regime.” (Persepolis 144). “And then, there wasn’t any more opposition...the regime had absolute power...and most people…had forgotten heir political conscience” (Persepolis 2 169; 323 in complete version).

4 How did the revolution exert power and influence over so many people, including the many educated and middle class people like Satrapi’s parents? Suppression of individuality- “In no time there were two kinds of women. The fundamentalist woman and the modern woman. You showed your opposition to the regime by letting a few strands of hair show.” (Satrapi 76) There was no true way to show rebellion against the government without sacrificing safety, as evidenced on the next page by the demonstrations against the veil that ended in violence. Targeting the lower class- “They gave this to my son at school. They told the boys that if they went to war and were lucky enough to die, this key would get them into heaven” (Satrapi 99) By targeting impressionable kids in schools, they were able to indoctrinate them into full heartedly believing in the regime, thus extending the power of the government. Through fundamentalists who were dedicated to the regime- “[...] the black curtains are to protect us from our neighbors. [...] Across the street! They’re totally devoted to the new regime. A glimpse of what goes on in our house would be enough for them to denounce us!” (Satrapi 105) The Islamic regime did not need a subversive police force to coerce Iranians into obeying the regime when those who believed in the regime did the policing themselves.

Through fundamentalists who were dedicated to the regime- “[...] the black curtains are to protect us from our neighbors. [...] Across the street! They’re totally devoted to the new regime. A glimpse of what goes on in our house would be enough for them to denounce us!” (Satrapi 105) The Islamic regime did not need a subversive police force to coerce Iranians into obeying the regime when those who believed in the regime did the policing themselves. Through threat of brutal violence- In Marji’s conversation with her mother on page 145 following her criticizing the teacher for teaching propaganda, Marji’s mother tells her not to rebel against the regime, lest she face torture and execution at the hands of a Guardian of the Revolution..

6 Why did many people leave after the revolution? Vignettes: The Jewels, The Cigarette, and The Shabbat The stress the citizens endure due to the war bring out the worst in them (man vs. man) War was beginning to affect those in Tehran (too dangerous) Citizens left under the increasing oppression (realization of a new anti-western, theocratic state)

7 Why did Marji’s parents decide not to leave with her? It’s difficult for immigrants to transition to a new country, as they often have to take low wage labour jobs. +Average monthly income of low wage job in Austria € 1,200. In Iranian culture, education for their children is extremely important. However if they had left with Marji to Vienna they would not be able to support her high level of studies without having the high level job her father had while in Iran. +Lycée Franςais de Vienne Tuition € 5,196-7,707 / Average living Expenses in Vienna rent alone for a small apartment €756.63 The Islamic Regime imposed a culture in which the parents have total control over their children's lives.Marji’s parents are more modern and have a more avant garde style of parenting.
