2 Lincoln and War October 1859, John Brown leads a raid on the federal arsenal at Harpers Ferry, Virginia. The raid will fail and Brown will be captured, tried and hanged.

3 1860: The Democratic Party will be divided by the slavery issue and will nominate two different candidates, one representing the Northern Democrats and the other representing the Southern Democrats.

4 Republican Abraham Lincoln wins the election. The South viewed Lincoln’s election as a direct threat to slavery and one month later on December 20 th 1860, South Carolina officially secedes from the Union.

5 By February 1861 six more states (Mississippi, Florida, Alabama, Georgia, Louisiana and Texas) joined South Carolina and form their own country, the Confederate States of America.

6 April 12 th, after demanding the US withdrawal of forces from the South, the Confederates open fire on Fort Sumter in Charlestown, South Carolina. Lincoln responds by asking for 75,000 volunteers to put down the rebellion.
