UDM Leadership and Diversity Program UDM program goals aim to address eliminating oral health disparities, increasing faculty diversity, and cultural competency.

UDM Leadership and Diversity Program Aided in development of Strategic Partnerships. Implemented through three different programs: URM Recruitment and Retention Programs. URM Faculty Development Program. School Based Sealant Program.

URM Recruitment Program Through active partnerships, UDM School of Dentistry actively recruits, trains and retains under- represented minority (URM) students to become allied dental health and dental professionals.

URM Recruitment and Retention Programs The majority of the funding was used to support the activities managed by Dr. Deirdre Young (Co-PD). Dental Imprint Program. Dental Hygiene Emphasis Workshop. Tour 4 Diversity. Annual Recruitment Activities.

URM Recruitment and Retention Programs Dental Imprint Program Through interactive enrichment experiences, we exposed underrepresented minority (URM) high school students to careers in allied dental health and dentistry.

URM Recruitment and Retention Programs Dental Hygiene Emphasis Workshop (DHEW) Through a 3-day interactive workshop, we exposed underrepresented minority students to allied dental career opportunities.

Recruitment Cont. Tour for Diversity Program (Partnership with Aetna, AAMC, ADEA, and US ARMY): Aids to promote medicine and dentistry to undergraduate students of racial and ethnic underrepresented minorities. Introduced underrepresented minority undergraduate students at campuses across the US to premedical enrichment activities. Twenty-one students participated in dental simulation activities held at UDM School of Dentistry

Short Term and Long Term Outcomes Increase the number of URM students and faculty in allied dental professions. Strengthening the academic and service pipeline.

Pipeline Impact Dental Imprint Program: Two schools within the Detroit HPSA area participated in a dental career day, and over 100 students within the school district were exposed to careers in dental hygiene and dentistry. 40 students, 9-12 th grade, participated in a tour of University of Detroit Mercy and University of Detroit Mercy School of Dentistry. 95% of participants expressed an interest in pursuing a career in allied and other health professions.

Pipeline Impact cont. Dental Hygiene Emphasis Workshop: One hundred percent increased their knowledge of careers in allied dental health professions, community outreach activities, oral hygiene health and research. About 250 students were targeted for recruitment to UDM Dental School (All Pipeline Programs).

URM Faculty Development URM Faculty Development Program will select and sponsor an URM faculty to attend the ADEA Leadership Institute. Dr. Melanie Mayberry, Director of Predoctoral Patient Care- UHC, has completed the ADEA Leadership Institute – March 2013. “… skills will assist me in my current position by encouraging me to view the bigger picture and confidence and motivation in pursuing "larger" leadership roles.”

Outcomes/ Impact URM students and faculty on pathways and in-line for University and Institutional leadership positions. A cadre of URM leaders emerging. Dean’s Perspective: Ability to influence the direction of the profession in critical areas of pipeline programs. Gain experience in framing oral health issues of national importance. Provided leadership for allied URM recruitment within the framework of the Dental Imprint Program.

Henry Ford Health System / UDMSD School-Based & Community Health Program In partnership with Henry Ford Health System and Michigan Department of Community Health, UDMSD works towards reducing oral health disparities among school aged children. Christiana Morton, RDH, is the PA 161 faculty at the dental school who manages the School based dental sealant program. UDMSD dental hygiene students provide preventive services to K – 7 students in Detroit Area Schools. 2012-13 Schools Include : New Paradigm Loving Academy, Thirkell Elementary School, Stewart Elementary School, and Ross Hill Academy. This student based model not only delivers the preventive care needed in the Detroit area schools but also trains the next generation of dental hygiene providers - who are culturally competent and have the clinical skills and technical knowledge to plan and implement school based dental sealant programs as well as other community based oral health programs.

Oral Health Screenings 2. Oral Prophylaxis 3. Fluoride Varnish Applications 4. Dental Sealant Applications 5. Oral Health Education

Objectives – UDMSD Dental Sealant Program Placement of dental sealants on 100 percent of the population with positive parent consent. Oral health education delivered to 100 percent of target population with 100 percent completing pre and post-tests. Contact made with 100 percent of parents whose child was found to be in need of further restorative care outside the school program. One hundred percent of sealant placements will be rechecked within six months and ensure a 90 percent retention rate. One hundred percent of un-retained sealants will be replaced at no cost to the child. Data entered into CDC SEALS database for 100 percent of children seen (includes number of sealants place and number retained, etc.)

Objectives – ADEA MDFD II Dental sealants will be placed on the molar teeth of about 80% of the low income children screened in the program. (Objective met 100%)

Short and Long Term Outcomes Establishing best practices for community-based and academic partnerships. Strengthening school-based oral health care. Supporting best practice guidelines that result in preventative oral care for children and reduce dental carries of children K-6. Increasing the proportion of low-income children who received any preventive dental service during the past year (objective 21-12).
