5. 5 Our “Green” Hospital Recycled 80 percent of construction waste products Installed power plant that can go “off the grid” during time of high power usage Awarded a Biomass Energy Grant to retrofit two boilers to burn methane gas from the county landfill. Using low-flow water fixtures Implemented special downward focusing lights in the parking lots to reduce light pollution Installed white roof to reduce the heat island effect and keep building cooler. Designated parking for energy efficient vehicles and made walking trails as well as facilities for employees to bike to work. Used environmentally friendly products such as low-VOC paints and furniture made of recycled materials where available. –LEED GOLD CERTIFIED- first Hospital in VA

6. 6 Our “Green” Hospital Each Department and all public areas have recycling containers in the break rooms All corrugated cardboard is sent to Materials Mgmt for recycling with a local recycling company. Used equipment and expired supplies are sent on mission trips

7. 7 Our “Green” Hospital Dietary uses a "pulper" system that recycles water as it grinds up the trash that we send through it. The final product is a dry "Cole slaw" like consistency. This greatly reduces the amount of trash bags leaving the facility! Operating Room (and other depts) recycle disposable products such as pulse ox cables, SCD sleeves, trocars, staplers and even EP Catheters Use a company that cleans and sterilizes our sharps containers to keep them out of the landfill.

Product Recycling 338,000 pounds of cardboard recycled a year and revenue generated of 18k 12k pounds of plastic from sharps containers not in the land fill with a savings of over $25k/year Reprocessed single use devices represent 7k pounds not in the landfill, but more importantly a cost savings of over $80K

10. Facility Construction Outcome Alternative transportation: We did include bicycle racks and shower facilities. These have been welcomed by those who use them and would be considered a success. Reduced Site Disturbance -development footprint. We have achieved a beautiful open campus with great views from all sides. We have a campus we can develop as opportunities and needs present themselves. Storm water Management - our retention ponds for storm water run off have performed well. Many birds and other wildlife have made their homes in the wetlands. We are exploring how we can use this water source for irrigation in upcoming projects. Reflective Roofing - has helped us manage the heat load on the building and HVAC costs are lower. Whenever outside temperatures are below 48 F degrees we are able to manage building temperatures by means of free cooling (using only outside air). Our chiller plant is off line for extended periods reducing our energy costs. Light Pollution - both to be good neighbors and avoid high levels of light wash the fixtures and light levels were held to low levels to achieve both objectives. We continue to evaluate for perceived safety status from patients, visitors and staff. Water Use Reduction - We have achieved a reduced water usage - due to chillers/ cooling towers being off line when outside temperatures allow us to use 'free cooling'. Our low flow toilets and lavatory fixtures have reduced water use. Energy Performance - Heat recovery and economizers were installed on our three 600 HP boilers to use the waste heat off the combustion exhaust to reheat water for the Central Energy Plant and the Dietary Department. We are using Methane Gas from our local landfill to operate any of our three boilers. This met the LEED requirement for at least 13.69% of energy coming from renewable energy sources. Additionally thermal comfort has been provided with 70% of the building occupants having individual controls. Water Sources – Discovered a well on the property that produces enough water to use in our chillers reducing the water demand from the county by 100,000 gallons a day. Overall we have seen a 20% energy consumption cost per square foot improvement over our old facility

Tying it back around RMH incorporates reprocessed products into its every day operations: Dietary cups, plates and take out trays are made from recycled products Paper standards for letterhead, envelops and other stationary supplies Purchasing reprocessed disposable supplies Standards for low VOC paints Standards on furniture/carpet and other products Work with the County Sherriff’s office to promote drug disposal days.
