10 R&D Tax Incentive part of a package of policy instruments to promote innovation, enhance competitiveness and thus supporting economic growth for the RSA. utilises the tax base to incentivise business enterprises, big and small, to undertake R&D activities in South Africa. 10

11 R&D Tax Incentive provides a 150% tax deduction on qualifying R&D expenditure for companies conducting research activities within South Africa. (currently) also allows companies conducting clinical trials or developing generic drugs to qualify. the development of pilot plants and prototypes are also eligible under this incentive. 11

12 Taxpayers require approval from the Minister of Science and Technology for R&D activities before claiming the deduction. The adjudication committee, comprising the DST, NT and SARS evaluate applications and recommend to the Minister. 12 R&D Tax Incentive
