Play: an informal activity such as kicking a ball around by oneself or a having a snowball fight. Lacks structure/rules. Recreation: an activity we engage in for diversion or fitness such as jogging or skiing. May have a purpose or goals.

Games: a more formal or organized activity; with more internal and external rules, often a goal to win. (ping pong) Sport: a competitive activity involving at least two competitors. It requires physical skill, has formal rules, and occurs within an organized framework. (leagues, teams)

As early as 300 B.C. there was formal boxing and wrestling in ancient Sumeria. In Ancient Egypt there was ballgames and swimming contests. Ancient Greece is credited with formalizing sports. It held the Olympics every 4 years in the city of Olympia. They believed that physical fitness and athletic competition were essential for human development.

A religious event honoring the Gods and a celebration of the beauty of the human body. Track and field events Combat events “like ultimate fighting”. Physical Education was vital to the Greeks.

Ancient Rome Developed the idea of the professional athlete. Mostly known for their Gladiators: trained fighters who fought to the death. Chariot racing.

2 branches of Sport Psychology: 1.The study of mental factors that influence performance in sport. 2.The application of this knowledge to improve performance. First experiment in sport psychology was published in 1898: cyclists perform better when competing than when riding alone. 1967 NASPSPA formed- north American society for the psychology of sport and physical activity.

Athletes and coaches desire to improve performance. They look for an edge. Pressure during cold war led to money being pumped into sports psychology by organizations to do research and provide successful strategies Sport is a big business! As athletes are paid higher salaries, owners/GM’s/coaches are wanting to make sure their athletes perform better than competitors. An increased fascination with fitness has lead to a higher interest in sport psychology by day to day people.
