2 The Difference ; A semicolon is used to divide up a sentence - - to tell the end of one sentence and the beginning of another. : A colon indicates that you have introduced what will follow - - a list of items, for example

3 What are the rules? Both the semi-colon and colon have some simple rules to follow. Basically, they each have three different rules to follow. Learn how they work in our writing…

4 Semicolons in a Compound Sentence
Use a ; between parts (clauses) of a compound sentence when a conjunction isn’t used (BOYSFAN) He had an idea; it was a creative one. The teacher taught; the students learned; all were happy.

5 Semicolons with conjunctive advs.
Use a ; before a conjunctive adverb like however, therefore, nevertheless, besides, thus, also, instead, hence, still, yet, so, moreover, etc. There must be a complete sentence before and after it to use a ; Remember to follow this adv. with a comma!

6 Semicolons in a series Use a ; between items in a series if there are commas Student council officers are Mary, president; Joe, vice president; Bob, secretary; and Betty, treasurer.
