Las Posadas A Latin American Holiday
2
Que es Las Posadas? This is an important part of Mexican Christmas celebrations. Las posadas translates to “The Inn or Shelter” If Las Posadas means Inn or Shelter, what do you think the holiday is about? Hint: It begins now and continues until Christmas Eve….and it pertains to Christianity
3
Que es Las Posadas? It has become popular in the United States as well. The holiday is meant to reenact Mary & Joseph’s search for shelter as they traveled from Nazareth to Bethlehem before Jesus was born.
4
How do they celebrate? Large groups of neighbors knock on each others doors & reenact Mary & Joseph asking for a place to stay or spend the night. The hostesses say no a few times before agreeing. They carry lit velas (what does this mean?) A child dressed as an angel usually leads the procession.
5
Then…. This continues for NINE nights! (From December 16 until December 24) On the 9 th day everybody will gather at a house, where the situation of Mary and Joseph’s search for lodging is reenacted at the door of each room. Then, at midnight, the hostess of the house leads the actors to a mesa that has been prepared and a feast begins.
6
Y Los Niños? Los niños get to enjoy a piñata! The piñata is usually in the shape of a star (The star guided the three kings on that same night…)
7
The song they sing… Las Posadas Las Posadas
8
Your task? Utilize the secuencia de sucesos sheets to tell me the sequence of events of the holiday Las Posadas. Meaning? Tell me what happens, in order, in the holiday Las Posadas. What you don’t finish in class, will be homework. Due when I see you next!
