2 Executive Summary Close to 11,000 women were full-time faculty members of Canadian universities in 2002-03, accounting for 30% of all full-time faculty, up 10% from 1990. Women strengthened their presence in both traditional and non-traditional disciplines and made notable gains in tenure status and academic rank. Women’s media salaries remain below those of their male colleagues, although the gap generally narrows when rank and field of study are taken into account.

4 Recruitment and Distribution Recruitment – 39% women (up 4% from 1990). At full professor level, only 15% of new appointments made to women. 52% of all women were found in health, humanities and education. Only 9% of women taught in engineering & applied sciences or mathematics & physical sciences Increased representation in:- –engineering and applied science from 3% to 10% –Mathematics & physical science from 7% to 13%

5 Tenure & Promotion 1990/1 – 14% of all tenured staff were women 2002/3 – 26% 60% of tenured women 40-54 years of age Women represent only 17.2% of full professors Lack of upward mobility? –Recent entry to labour market in large numbers –Women experience more work interruptions

6 Salary Median salary differential – women earn approx $13000 less than men. By rank –Full professor - $6100 less (94% of men’s salaries) –Assistant professor - $2600 less (86% of men’s salaries) By discipline:- –Education $7300 less –Fine & applied arts - $9500 less –Social sciences - $14000 less –Mathematics - $13400 less –Engineering - $12800 less
