Graphs of Equations Objectives: Be able to find solutions, intercepts and the symmetry of a graph by hand and by using the calculator. TS: Analyzing information and data. COMPLETE WARM-UP WORKSHEET!!!
2
Finding Solutions A solution to an equation is an order pair that makes the equation true. Examples: (-2, 4) is a solution to 2x + 3y = 8 but (3, -3) is not a solution of y = 4x 2 – 3 Note: The table feature on your calculator is a good way to get a list of solutions.
3
Let’s try a few 1) Find any solution of y = -3x 3 – x 2 +10x 2) Find three solutions of y = (5x – 2)(x+1)
4
Finding x-intercepts To find an x-intercept you let __ = 0. Example: 1) Find the x-intercepts of f(x) = 3x 2 – x – 10 2) Find the x-intercepts of 3x – 7y = 14 Remember: Your calculator can find the x-intercepts of a graph by using the “zero” feature.
5
Finding y-intercepts To find a y-intercept you let __ = 0. Example: 1) Find the y-intercept of f(x) = 3x 2 – x – 10 2) Find the y-intercept of 3x – 7y = 14.
