5 New beam pipe for pixel upgrade CMS Technical Coordination requested in Nov 2010 a CAD design study for a beam pipe diameter that still would be compatible in installation and required clearances with 12 face innermost barrel layer. BPIX design study finished in Jan. 2011 Considered: cabling clearances inner shield imperfections beam displacements < 2 mm minimal overlaps of sensor areas Conclusion: mean 1 st layer Si- radius = 29.8 mm need 2 mm clearance to beam pipe need adjustable closing mechanism Beam pipe diameter (outer) = 45 mm !

7 Baseline: Long Shutdown 1 Timeframe Est IntegTasks lumi /fb -1 Items carried over from year-end stop 2011-12 (if no opening) 2012-141-10Yoke Endcap disk 4 construction at +z and –z ends in situ. 4’th muon endcap stations +z and –z (CSC & RPC) (-z only if 2012) 1’st endcap muon station readout granularity restoration +z and -z Beampipe region shielding + forward region opening under vacuum -forward systems CASTOR, ZDC, reinstallable for p-p HO, HF & CASTOR calorimeters phototransducer change Beampipe : bakeout if required based on NEG tests ( ~2 mo more)  possible installation of 45mm central beampipe  option to remove all pipe at start of shutdown (time vs logistic simplification) Beam Scintillation Counter upgrade/replacement. Barrel – endcap seal revision for colder Tracker operations + very many infra & common systems consolidations. After which CMS should be ready for 13-14 TeV, 100fb -1 and 1-2 x 10 34 cm -2 s -1

8 Dubna Feb 2011 AB What about the 2’nd Long Shutdown? Programme likely to be strongly affected by the decision to postpone 1’st Long Shutdown Recall 2016 was a good compromise between different interests requesting 2015 & 2017. LS 2 start date and duration to be re-considered based on: - Physics: achieved pre LS 1, and targeted between LS1 and LS2 - Actual start/duration of LS 1: eg Nov 2012-Feb 2014 or Dec 2012-June 2014? (Presumably not sensible to have < 2 full running years between LS1 and LS 2) - Status/capabilities of LHC & Experiments on completion of LS1 & pre LS2 - Credible ready-date of various upgrades wrt shutdown timing. - Performance consolidation/improvement/risk reduction expected from LS 2. Change brings stress but also provokes the imagination! Considering ways to avoid delays to (already delayed) work on: - HCAL consolidation (HPD replacement & depth segmentation), ready 2015. - Installing low-mass 4-layer pixel tracker, (also ready 2015) on 45mm beampipe.  possible installation and bakeout of new 45mm beampipe in 2013-14  pixel in year-end technical stop 2015-16 or 2016-17 (3mo min)
