1 Math CAMPPP 2011 Perspectives ??? Proportional Reasoning Breakout # 3

Proportional Reasoning – Breakout 3 Learning Goals: Consider the various criteria (lenses) through which we assess student work. Understand the importance of shared teacher/student understanding of assessment criteria. Reflect on personal assessment criteria. Recognize that criteria are contextual. Practice responding by looking at student samples through a variety of lenses. 22

Proportional Reasoning – Breakout 3 Minds On ~ 20 minutes The Clapping Game 33

Proportional Reasoning – Breakout 3 Action – Part 1 ~ 30 minutes Responding to Students Over Time What are we looking for when we provide feedback to students? –Knowledge/Application? –Communication? –Thinking/Problem Solving? –Mathematical Processes? –All of the Above –Other? 44

Proportional Reasoning – Breakout 3 Action Responding to Students Over Time We will practice providing feedback on samples of student work through the following lenses (Achievement Chart and Math Processes): –Knowledge and Application (Selecting Tools and Strategies, Connecting) –Communication (Representing, Communicating) –Thinking (Reasoning and Proving, Problem Solving, Reflecting) 55

Proportional Reasoning – Breakout 3 Action Responding to Students Over Time We will also consider the frameworks from Ruth Beatty and Cathy Bruce –Generalization Strategies –Justification 66

Proportional Reasoning – Breakout 3 Action Groups of 4 – Jigsaw Number off 1,2,3 around the room Number 1’s will be using the lenses: –Knowledge and Application (Selecting Tools and Strategies, Connecting) –Generalization Strategies and Justification 77

Proportional Reasoning – Breakout 3 Action Number 2’s will be using the lenses: –Communication (Representing, Communicating) –Generalization Strategies and Justification 88

Proportional Reasoning – Breakout 3 Action Number 3’s will be using the lenses: –Thinking (Reasoning and Proving, Problem Solving, Reflecting) –Generalization Strategies and Justification 99

Proportional Reasoning – Breakout 3 Action You need a pen and your marker. Each group will have the following materials provided: –1 copy of the Generic Mathematical Processes Rubric per person (you will only receive the section related to your lens). –1 copy of the Generalization Strategies and Justification framework per person –1 copy of BLM PR3.3 Recording Sheet per person Move to the tables we will designate for Numbers 1, 2 and 3. No more than 4 people in a group. Wait for the next instruction. 10

Proportional Reasoning – Breakout 3 Action – Your Task You will have the next 20 minutes (approximately) to look at the criteria for your lens using the resources we have provided to ensure that you have a common understanding as a group. Record your group’s common understanding of “Important Things to Consider/Look For” in the top box on the Recording Sheet. Leave other boxes blank. Questions? 11

Proportional Reasoning – Breakout 3 Action –Part 2 ~15 minutes Each group will receive the same set of 4 student samples which have been numbered for identification. Each person will start with one of the samples. Using BLM 3.3, INDIVIDUALLY record your feedback for that student using the criteria for your lens (see box at top of your page). Record in the appropriate box. When you are done, turn the sample over to signal you are ready to pass the sample to the next person. When everyone has their sample turned over, pass the samples ONE place to the right. 12

Proportional Reasoning – Breakout 3 Action –Part 3 ~ 20 minutes Round Robin Starting with sample 1, do a Round Robin in your group, to share your feedback. Come to CONSENSUS on 1 or 2 KEY pieces of feedback for that student. Record with marker on the half piece of chart paper (be sure to put the student sample number on the chart paper along with the feedback) Repeat for all 4 samples (approx 5 min per sample) Post chart paper beside samples on the wall when done. 13

Proportional Reasoning – Breakout 3 Action –Part 4 ~ 15 minutes Gallery Walk Create groups of 3 by taking one person from each Expert Group to form new Jigsaw groups. Take a Gallery Walk to look at each sample. Each Jigsaw group member will share the justification for feedback with the other group members, based on his/her lens. 14

Proportional Reasoning – Breakout 3 Consolidate ~ 15 minutes Whole Group Discussion Did focussing on a particular lens help you provide feedback? Why/why not? 15

Proportional Reasoning – Breakout 3 Consolidate Whole Group Discussion Did you notice any overlaps in the feedback provided through the different lenses? 16

Proportional Reasoning – Breakout 3 Consolidate Whole Group Discussion Will you look at providing feedback any differently now? Why/why not? 17

Proportional Reasoning – Breakout 3 Consolidate Whole Group Discussion What questions/concerns do you still have? What are your next steps? 18

Proportional Reasoning – Breakout 3 Consolidate ~ 5 minutes Perspective Passport / Math Map Individually reflect on your learning and next steps. Record in your Passport or on your Math Map. 19
