Symbolism
2
What is symbolism or a symbol? Basic: A symbol is anything that stands for something else. More complex: A symbol is an object or a word that represent an abstract idea. In literature, a symbol is when one thing stands for, or represents, something else in order to make us understand something about the text. Some symbols are more universal (flag=country) while others might be more specific (the tulip in the text represents Billy’s sorrow).
