AKA: cliff dwellers, cause would set up on a side of a cliff or rock. This was an advantage because they could see far. They used natural materials around them to build their housing. HOUSING OF NATIVE AMERICANS

Europeans copied their shelter from the native Americans. They had house raisings to build houses. Had to adapt because some materials used in Europe could not be used in the U.S. because of colder climates. E.G. thatch roofs Log cabins became popular HOUSING OF COLONISTS

People started to move more west for bigger plots of land. This is when sod houses and plantation houses started to be built. At this time, agrarians came to the lands, so they were able to farm and grow. Urban housing City housing Row houses Duplexes Tenement houses High density of people in one area HOUSING DURING 1700S AND 1800S

Also during the 1700s and 1800s a lot of housing changing from farm living to city living. More technology and machinery, inventions Some houses started to use plumbing and indoor toilets. CHANGES IN HOUSING

Increase in immigrants early in the century. WWI- no housing built By 1929- almost have the U.S. lived in cities because of the Depression and work available. In the early part of the century housing was horrific because it was not government regulated, people had no money, and not enough housing and people built their own substandard housing. HOUSING IN THE 1900S
