1 Whatcom Place Quilt Project Art 100: Art Appreciation

2 Class Project: Art 100 Whatcom Place Quilt: Visual Symbols Objective: In this project students will create an artwork in response to an assigned theme. Through this project students will explore the creative process, and how visual imagery can work as a type of language.

3 The Assignment: As a team of students create a black and white panel for a larger quilt. Use the visual strategies of silhouette when creating your images. Avoid line drawings. Fall 2012 Theme: Cherry Point

4 Artists to look at: Keith Haring, Kara Walker, Shazia Sikander, Beatrice Coron

5 Research: Kept simple- a field trip with cameras, and a short discussion at the beach. Whatcom Place Quilt: Field Prompts Topical Questions: What do you see that reveals the human presence? What do you see that is nature? What do you see that reveals history? What do you see when you imagine the future? 5 years? 10 years? 50 years?

6 Seeing questions: What do you see immediately? What stands out? What do you need to search for? What is hidden? Not seen?

8 Materials: Tyvek, Sharpie Markers, Black Paint Techniques: Students worked in teams with a variety of techniques and strategies. Overhead projector used to transfer photo that has been xeroxed onto transparency sheets. Students use the projector to enlarge the photo and can alter and edit as they draw.

9 Students working with images and field trip notes as inspiration for less direct drawing. This team is using two techniques: direct painting and cutting silhouettes.

10 The labor intensive technique of cutting stensils. Putting it all together!
