Freire’s Life Born September 19, 1921 in Recife, Brazil Died of heart failure in Sao Paulo, Brazil on May 2, 1997 Grew up during the Depression Studied Law and Philosophy at the University of Recife Married and had 5 children

Freire’s Life Continued Children influenced his educational theories Stopped practicing law to help the urban poor Received Doctorate in 1959-University of Recife Became the first director of the University of Recife's Cultural Extension Service Very radical and eventually exiled

Life Continued In 1969 he was a visiting scholar at Harvard University Moved to Geneva, Switzerland where he assumed the role of special educational adviser to the World Congress of Churches. He returned to Brazil in 1979

Pedagogy of the Oppressed (1970) Most famous piece of work Currently one of the most quoted educational texts, especially in Latin America, Africa and Asia He argues for system of education that emphasizes learning as an act of culture and freedom
