3 While in the Galapagos… Darwin noticed small birds with very similar features. Size (15-20 cm) Color (brownish/blackish) He also noticed differences in birds based on their location in the islands. Beak Size Mating Behaviors Song Melodies

5 Why are they different?!? Resources were different in various parts of the Islands. In certain locations, certain Finches with a specific variation were at a bigger “advantage” These Finches won the “struggle for existence” and those without the advantage died off. Overtime, only those with the advantage were left. This accounts for the differences in various parts of the Islands.

7 Discovery of Genes Genetic research began soon after Darwin’s “Origin of the Species” was published. Comparisons of DNA and proteins of different species indicate the degree to which those species are related.
