Chapter 2 Data
2
Statistics – the science of collecting, analyzing, and drawing conclusions from data
3
Data values, no matter what kind are useless without their context Answering the questions: Who, What, When, Where, Why, and sometimes How can provide the context for data values The answer to the first two questions are essential. If you can’t answer Who and What you don’t have data and you don’t have any useful information
4
Identify the W’s in this situation A listing posted by the Arby’s restaurant chain gives, for each of the sandwiches it sells, the type of meat in the sandwich, the number of calories, and the serving size in ounces. The data might be used to access the nutritional value of different sandwiches. Identify the Who, What, When, Where, Why, and How for the situation above.
5
Individuals who answer a survey are referred to as respondents. People on whom we experiment are subjects or participants Animals, Plants, and other inanimate subjects in an experiment are often just called experimental units The characteristics recorded about each individual are called variables
6
When a variable names categories and answers questions about how cases fall into those categories, we call it a categorical variable or qualitative variable When a measured variable with units answers questions about the quantity of what is measured, we call it a quantitative variable or numerical variable
7
Identify the following variables: The appraised value of homes in Springdale quantitative variable The color of cars in the parking lot categorical variable The amount of time it takes students to drive to school quantitative variable The zip code of an individual categorical variable
8
Identifying and Labeling Variables A listing posted by the Arby’s restaurant chain gives, for each of the sandwiches it sells, the type of meat in the sandwich, the number of calories, and the serving size in ounces. The data might be used to access the nutritional value of different sandwiches. Identify the variables in the problem and indicate whether they should be treated as categorical or quantitative.
