® 28 September 2006 Southwest Research Institute ® Engine Lubricants Research Department Update on SwRI’s IR&D Program To Study Engine Oil Formulation Effects on Catalyst Poisoning in an Engine Dynamometer Test Presented to the GF-5 Emissions System Compatibility Improvement Team by Bill Buscher

® 28 September 2006 Topics Recap on Test Development Motivation Progress Report Moving Forward with Development

® 28 September 2006 Motivation for Test Development Performance Test has been on “Wish List” – GF-3 – GF-4 – Now GF-5 Notion that “Not all P is created equal” Discovery of volatile phosphorus on catalysts SwRI Internal research dollars secured in 2005

® 28 September 2006 Progress Since Last ESCIT Meeting Completed test on Oil 33

® 28 September 2006 Progress Since Last ESCIT Meeting

® 28 September 2006 Progress Since Last ESCIT Meeting

® 28 September 2006 Progress Since Last ESCIT Meeting

® 28 September 2006 Progress Since Last ESCIT Meeting

® 28 September 2006 Progress Since Last ESCIT Meeting What happened between 200 and 260 hrs? – Severe thermal deactivation – Surface Area Analysis: 200-hour aged = 18.05 m 2 /g 260-hour aged = 3.54 m 2 /g No indication of temperature spike Cannot account for thermal deactivation

® 28 September 2006 Moving Forward Mitigate potential for thermal excursion Lower speed, load and catalyst inlet temperature – 2000 rpm – 65 kPa manifold vacuum – Oil temp of 145 o C  externally heat to 150 o C – Exhaust temperature ~530 o C Optimize crankcase ventilation transport (currently investigating)

® 28 September 2006 Moving Forward Test Matrix Plan 1.Oil 33 2.Oil 33 (with PCV diverted to atmosphere) 3.Oil 35 (no Phosphorus, discrimination?) 4.Oil 33 (repeat-check)

® 28 September 2006 Conclusion Important that SwRI continue investigation Changes to avoid thermal deactivation Test matrix to start in coming weeks
