3 Mathematical Moments Freely available - Many on the Excellence Gateway http://tlp.excellencegateway.org.uk/tlp/stem/stem-mm.html http://tlp.excellencegateway.org.uk/tlp/stem/stem-mm.html and a few more in the FE magazine on the National Centre for Excellence in the Teaching of Mathematics (NCETM) portal https://www.ncetm.org.uk/resources/36890 https://www.ncetm.org.uk/resources/36890

4 Mathematical Moments Each Mathematical Moment invites you to focus on a particular mathematical topic, offers you suggestions for activities you could carry out with your learners, prompts you to anticipate, and then reflect on learners' responses, and finally offers you some follow- up ideas. The topics are addressed at levels ranging from Entry to Level 3, though many Mathematical Moments are useful over several levels.

11 Continue to review learners’ prior understanding of how to use factorisation to solve quadratic equations by setting the challenge ‘If x = – 4 and x = – 1 are the solutions, what was the equation?’ Display the graph of the function on the whiteboard. Draw learners’ attention to the association between the roots of an equation and its factorisation. Now display the equation: x2 + 5x + 1 = 0 and discuss the issue that this cannot be factorised in the same way as the earlier example. Ask learners ……………… Ask learners to work in pairs and match the quadratic equations to the graphs. Emphasise that all the quadratics have a graphical representation.
