Systems Session 1 11-19-12

Today’s Goals Participants will: Increase scientific literacy in systems thinking Understand how to teach systems within existing instructional materials Increase understanding of common student misconceptions in systems Increase effective use of instructional strategies in science

Connecting to the research Key Findings Key Findings for Students Key Findings for Teachers HPL 1 Students come to the classroom with preconceptions about how the world works. Surface student preconceptions and adjust instruction HPL 2 Students must have a deep foundation of usable knowledge and understand facts in the context of a conceptual framework. Understand the content and conceptual framework of instructional units HPL 3 Students must be taught explicitly to take control of their own learning by monitoring their progress. Teach students to think about their thinking. Research on How People Learn (HPL)

Schedule Is it a System? Magic Fish Systems Stations Systems Thinking Exploring a System What we think now

Is it a system?

Write what you think a system is now...

Is it a system?

Systems Stations Make eye contact with someone who is not at your table. Visit each station and decide if the object at the station is or is not a system.

What do K-5 Students need to know about systems? Work with the people at your table to create a continuum using the Systems Standards sheet. Create a chart that shows your thinking. Be ready to share.

Analyzing a Toy Is it a system? Draw and label the parts of your wind-up toy What are the functions of each part? What are the inputs and outputs?

Where are systems opportunities in FOSS?

Systems Questions Consider the Questions to Ask About Systems: Which ones do you think are particularly good for students in your grade band?

Next steps...  Increase scientific literacy in systems thinking  Understand how to teach systems within existing instructional materials  Increase understanding of common student misconceptions in systems  Increase effective use of instructional strategies in science

Sum it up...
