Group 18 Chen Zhang Client: Professor Frank Yin Sept. 30, 2015 Smart Walker Project PRELIMINARY PRESENTATION

Overview Current organization of team responsibilities Preliminary design schedule Existing Solutions and list of patents Specification and requirements Customer need and project scope Background

Walkers are important tools for people who need additional support to maintain balance while walking. --Traditional walkers

Background --Wheel walkers  Does not require arm strength  Allows the user to move more smoothly

Background LIMITATIONS Traditional walkers  Require arm strength  Limit walking speed Wheel walkers  Unstable  Difficult to control

Customer need and project scope Safety (automatic) Stability, mobility and slope detection Power selection Optional seat Cost Shape  Combination of both types  The smart walker is designed to benefit people suffering from memory loss.

Customer need and project scope Stability Mobility Slope detection o The smart walker should detect gradient change and adjust itself to maintain constant speed. o Allow user to remain a constant gait size.

Specifications and Requirements frameseat Height (inch)3221 Width (inch)2515 Depth (inch)208.5 Dimensions

Specifications and requirements Weight No more than 150% of the heaviest model in market The upper limit is about 36 pounds Cost No more than twice the price of the most expensive model in market The budget is about $400 Force limit The handle of the walker should be able to support the upper body weight of a normal adult Force limit is about 130 pounds.

Existing Solutions PAM-AID VAPAM- AID GUIDOPAMM

PAM-AID  PAM-AID: Personal Adaptive Mobility Aid  Designed for people who have mobility problems and visual impairments  Allows user to have maximum control, incompatible with current design specs  Does not incorporate motorized locomotion, only controls the orientation of front wheels

VAPAM-AID  Updated version of PAM-AID  First commercialized version of the prototype  Improvements to the model, i.e. obstacle detection

GUIDO  Also commercialized  Includes a park mode to assist users transferring from a chair  Provides insights into the smart walker project

PAMM  PAMM: Personal Aid for Mobility and Monitoring  Includes a set of health monitoring sensors to record the user’s activity level, such as speed and applied forces  Provides insights into the smart walker project, i.e. help people maintain a normal gait
