Scientific Method Terms By Matthew Goforth

Pure and Applied Science Pure science: science for the purpose of curiosity. Like fast cars. Applied Science: science that is applied to humanity to fix a problem. Like alternate energy sources.

Inferences and Fair tests Inference: a logical explanation for something that happened or something you noticed. Like I noticed that one plant has grown more then the other, so that means that one must have gotten more sun. Fair test: a test is fair because you control all of the variables For it to be a fair test, it must be able to be replicated over and over again.

Variables Independent Variable: the thing you change in the experiment. Dependent Variable: what changes as a result of what you changed Constant Variable: what never changes

Observation Observation: An observation is something that you notice. Like I see that the sky is blue. Or that I noticed that this power point is blue also.

Conclusions Conclusion: a conclusion is pretty much just a summary of the experiment. In a summary you usually in include an inference inference In the conclusion you list what you learned, your inference, if your hypothesis was correct and any observations you might have had.

Bar/Line Graphs After you collect your data, you organize it into a graph. Usually you’ll use one of two graphs. A bar or line graph Line Graph: you use a line graph when time is the independent variable Bar Graph: you use a bar graph when time isn’t the independent variable

Qualitative/Quantitative Qualitative: a statement where numbers are not involved. – I’m on the computer – Or its hot outside Quantitative: a statement that includes numbers – There are two doors – Or this is the eighth slide

Mean/Median/Mode Mean: the mean is the average – You find the average by adding all the numbers and dividing by the amount of numbers – For example, the mean of 1,2 and 3 is 1 plus 2 plus 3, which is 6 then divide that by 3 and it is 2 Median: the median is the middle number – Like the median of 1,2 and 3 is 2 Mode: mode is the number that is repeated the most – Like the mode of 1,2,3,4,4 is 4

Hypothesis/Theory Hypothesis: a hypothesis is an educated guess – In an if and then form or a cause and effect form Theory: a theory is a hypothesis that has been tested over and over by many different people. – An example of a theory is the theory of evolution

Control/Experimental Groups Control Groups: control groups are left normal. – These are used to be compared to the changes happening to the experimental group Experimental Groups: are the groups that get what ever is being tested. – This group is the group that is being studied for a change to test a hypothesis
