1 Good Morning/Afternoon O Please find your Yes Test Sheet on the front table. O Congratulations to those of you who passed the yes test! O If you did NOT pass the yes test, you will need to fix the error, and resubmit your paper to me no later than Wednesday, Jan. 13 at 3:00. O Don’t panic! I will explain how it will affect your grade.

3 1. Ambiguous  Adjective  Open to more than one interpretation  Sample sentence: The dress color was ambiguous. Some thought it was black and blue, while others thought it was white and gold. “The dress” became a social media sensation!

4 2. ambivalent O adjective O Simultaneously having opposing feelings; uncertain O She had ambivalent feelings about her dance class: On one hand, she enjoyed the exercise, but on the other hand she thought the choice of dances could be more interesting.

5 3. apathetic O Adjective O Feeling or showing little emotion; not interested or concerned. O The student was surprisingly apathetic. When the teacher offered candy as an incentive to answer the question, he said, “Meh…”

6 4. arbitrary O adjective O Determined by impulse rather than reason O The principal repeatedly makes arbitrary decisions. One day he says students can use their cell phones at lunch, and the next day he says they cannot.

7 5. capricious O adjective O Impulsive and unpredictable O The referee's capricious behavior angered the players because he was inconsistent with his calls; he would call foul for minor contact, but ignore elbowing and kicking.

8 6. equivocate O verb O To avoid making a definite statement O When confronted on what he would do about the mounting debt crisis, the politician would only equivocate; we could tell he did not want to offend any of his voters.

9 7. indifferent O Adjective O Not caring one way or the other O The old fisherman was completely indifferent to the pain and hunger he felt; his only concern was catching the enormous marlin he had hooked.

10 8. spontaneous O adjective O Unplanned; naturally occurring O Dave is such a good musician that he can create a song spontaneously, without having to stop and think about it.

11 9. whimsical O adjective O 1. Subject to erratic behavior; unpredictable O 2. Playfully quaint or fanciful, especially in an appealing and amusing way: O Egbert rarely behaved as expected; indeed, he was a whimsical soul whose every decision was anybody’s guess. O The clowns decorated their house in a whimsical way. There were balloons lining their stairway.

12 10. impunity O Noun O Def. exemption from punishment or freedom from the injurious consequences of an action. O Sample sentence: During the Civil Rights Movement, police beat peaceful protestors, and they did so with impunity.

14 1. inconsequential O adjective O Unimportant O The cost of the meal was inconsequential to Quentin because he wasn’t paying for it.

15 2. superficial O adjective O Concerned only with what is on the surface or obvious; shallow. (May be literal or figurative.) O The wound on his leg was only superficial, even though it looked like a deep cut. (literal) O The girl only wanted to date a guy who drove a BMW – she was a little bit superficial.

16 3. tenuous O adjective O Having little substance or strength; shaky; unsure, weak O Her grasp on reality is tenuous at best; she’s not even sure what year it is. O When I went in to take the test, I felt tenuous because I had only studied for one hour.

17 4. trivial O adjective O Of little importance or significance O As the boat was filling up with water, Janet asked what type of bird flew by. We told her to stop thinking about trivial things and get to scooping out the water!

18 Vocabulary Assignment O Write one good sentence for each word. O Your sentences should each: O Show that you understand the meaning of the word. O Use the word as the correct part of speech (noun, verb, adjective, etc.) O You may change the ending of the word but must use it correctly. O Due tomorrow!
