9 Early Life: Gabriel García Márquez was born on March 6, 1927 in Aracataca, Colombia. His Father was Gabriel Eligio García and his Mother was Luisa Santiago Márquez. He lived with his grandparents until the age of 9 when his grandfather died. At age 9 he moved to Sucre, Colombia to live with his parents HIS LIFE

10 Early Life: García Márquez’s grandparents were the most influential part of his early life. His Grandfather helped to shape his Liberal political and social views. HIS LIFE

11 Family: García Márquez married Mercedes Barcha in 1958 His first son, Rodrigo Márquez, was born a year later. The family traveled throughout the Southern U.S. in 1961, an area García Márquez wanted to see because of its influence on William Faulkner, before settling in Mexico City HIS LIFE

12 Family: His second son, Gonzalo, was born in 1964 Rodrigo went on to be a television and film director Gonzalo is now a Graphic Designer HIS LIFE

33 Career: García Márquez started his career as a journalist in Cartagena His last article written in Colombia was The Story of a Shipwrecked Sailor, for El Espectador, a controversial piece that contradicted a government report about a shipwrecked. HIS CAREER

34 Career: His novel One Hundred Years of Solitude launched García Márquez’s fame From his fame he was able to facilitate negociations between the Colombian government and rebels His fame earned him friendships with influential people, such as former Cuban dictator Fidel Castro HIS CAREER

35 Career: With stories described as graphic, he has always been associated with film He was the Executive Director of the of the Film Institute of Havana as well as the Head of the L.A. Film Foundation. He has written several screenplays and others have adapted his works for film. HIS CAREER

36 Style: García Márquez writes in a style as many of the authors in the Boom do; Magical Realisms Magical realism is the idea of mystical events occurring in everyday life without people reacting as if it were just any other event HIS CAREER

37 Nobel Prize García Márquez won the Nobel Prize in Literature in 1982 His speech was entitled “Solitude in Latin America” García Márquez saw the awarding as an award for all literature of the subcontinent. HIS CAREER

64 100 Years of Solitude The story is about 7 generations of the Buendía family in the town of Macondo It begins with the founding of the town by José Arcadio Buendía José believes he creates the rest of the world from Macondo Many extraordinary events happen within Macondo A riddle is deciphered by a Buendía male that told of all the fortunes and misfortunes of the Buendía family. 65 Love in the Time of Cholera The story evolves around Fermina Daza, who rejects Florentino Ariza, her first naïve love. She married by her self designated age of 21 to Juvenal Urbino, a doctor. Both men show they are not entirely devoted to the women they are with, which includes Juvenal cheating on Fermina Fermina realizes the maturity of her love with Florentino, but in their old asge they can only have limited communications and never fully share their love. 66 Of Love and Other Demons This is the Story of a 12 year old girl who gets rabies She was believed to be a “miracle worker” because of the hallucinations she would have with the rabies. Her copper hair supposedly kept growing even after her death, making it certain that she was definitely magic. HIS FAMOUS WORKS

67 No One Writes to the Colonel The story is about a retired Colonel from the 1000 Days War. He is waiting on his promised pension from the government. The colonel lives with his wife in a town under martial law. The story takes place during the Colombian “la violencia”, a time of great civil unrest. HIS FAMOUS WORKS

68 The Autumn of the Patriarch This story is about the life of an eternal dictator The dictator is given a “God-like” status and is respected by his people The story ends with the Dictator’s body being found in the political palace, showing that in his God-like power, he forgot to look for the opposition. 69 The General and His Labyrinth This is a novel about the Latin American hero, Simón Bolívar It contains stories of his travels to different cities within Latin America As Bolívar ages and weakens so does the stability of the government that he created.
