Intercultural Studies Culture Clash By:Alanood Aljunaibi ID:H00248109

Anna and the King This movie shows the deference between the cultures and the personalities in Anna and the king of Saim, It all started when Anna a British schoolteacher moves with her son, Louis there to teach the kings children.

Clash One : Women treatment cultural dimensions: strong masculinity/femininity, power distance - timing: 00:21:30 – 00:23:40 The son of the king felt angry of Louis when he interrupted him as he was speaking about his country and says “ son of teacher forgetting I'm son of king! “ Louis told him that he couldn’t care less then his mother told him to remember what she have told him before, Louis tells his mother that he is sorry. Then the son of the king says “ In my country men never tell women he’s sorry about anything ever “ and refuse to apologize.

Clash Two : Present to King Mongkut cultural dimensions: power distance, ascribed or achieved status, formality timing: 00:11:07 – 00:19:37 Anna went to meet the king, then the king decided to end the audience before listening to Anna's request, she ignores the Siamese protocol and addresses the King directly. After calling off the security guards, the King talks to Anna and decides that she shall teach all of the King's children, When Anna introduces herself as the requested schoolteacher, the King treats her with restraint because in Siamese culture wisdom is connected with (old) age and (male) gender (ascribed status) – he therefore does not believe her to be capable of teaching the royal offspring. Anna contradicts this assumption, as in her culture status is achieved rather than ascribed.

Clash Three: Slavery cultural dimensions: traditionalism (religious), universalism/particularism - timing: 00:27:00 – 00:35:10 Anna heard some weird voices while she was talking to the son of the king, She discovered by following the voice that it was from a chained slave in the backyard of a noblewoman's house. She buy the slaves freedom with her wedding ring. The noblewoman insists on her traditional privilege of owning slaves to serve her. Although slaves have the right to buy their freedom this right has probably never been respected. The law in Siam all depends on who you are and who you know. As the King says, in the Siamese judicial system noblemen have more rights than the lower classes. Slaves seem to have almost no rights at all.

Clash Four: The Dinner cultural dimensions: power distance timing: 00:53:57 – 00:55:43 Anna is asked to organize a Western dinner to improve Siam's relations with the British. While Anna is teaching the servants to serve drinks, the King appears and the slaves fall to their knees and drop (and break) the glasses. At the dinner the Siamese translator tells one of the British that this is the first time in Siamese history that everyone has been allowed to stand in the presence of the King. He is extremely uncomfortable with this change in power distribution and seems relieved that it is only for one night.

Clash Five: Act Like God cultural dimensions: power distance - individualism timing: 00:11:03 – 00:12:30 When the public people Worship him and put their head in the floor as a respect for him and kneel down in front of him without looking in his eyes, In there culture the king is treated like a god. But Anna when she saw the king she talked to him with respect but without kneeling to him and she also looked in his eyes while she was talking about how she is the one that will teach his son.
