3 Purpose To study the effects of colonialism o Oppression (cultural, political etc) Studies when, how, where, why and who of the before and after (have to understand before in order to analyze the aftermath) o When: in what time period it occurred and when they left o How: with what means did they colonize o Where: what region was colonized and what was it like after they left o Why: for what reason was the colonization taking place and why did they leave in the end o Who: what people/nation was colonized and who were they when the invaders left

Subaltern: the lower or colonized classes Worlding: the process where people are brought into the dominant Eurocentric/Western global society

6 General Questions Were the people oppressed by the invaders? Was nearly everything changed when the invasion happened? – What emotional, political and cultural effects could that later have once the invaders left? How many differences are there within the nation from before and after the invaders left, what are they?

7 Literary Questions Does the text include invaders ideology? Does the text demonstrate bias in favour of the invaders? Are there explicit examples of oppression within the text?
