System Development Life Cycle (SDLC) TOBY WILSON

Stages of the Life Cycle  1. Analysis  2. Design  3. Implementation  4. Testing  5. Evaluation

Analysis  This is the area here the problem is identified  The team in this section do the following tasks:  Identify the problem  Discuss with the customer the needs of the end user  Priorities tasks based on the customer’s needs

Design  This is where the design of the solution is created, so that the programmers know how to develop the end solution and what the end solution needs to look like  This includes the following sections:  User Interface Design  Algorithms  Database Design

Implementation  This is where the program is being created, based on the information given from the Analysis & Design

Testing  This is testing the program that has been created, and ensuring that all key components of the program work in the intended manner  This section incudes:  Test Plan  Testing Evidence  Action Takin is Necessary

Evaluation  This is where the project is reviewed as a hole. This is a meeting between the customer and the people involved to discuss what would have been done differently, and discuss what could be done in later versions  This section includes  Evaluation of the customers needs  What could be improved  How will this be improved  Maintenance

Different Models  We are going to be looking at three different models, that incude all of the steps we have discussed  The Three models are:  Cyclical  Waterfall  Spiral

Cyclical SDLC Analysis Evaluation TestingImplementation Design

Pros and Cons of this Model PROS:  Simple to understand  Saves money because you only have to do It once CONS:  The stages may have to be in a different order  May need to do some stages multiple times - inefficient

Waterfall SDLC

Differences  You can only move onto the next part of the Waterfall model, once there has been a review of the stage completed.  Meaning the evaluation happens after every step

Pros and Cons of this model PROS:  Saves money because you don’t need to do multiple stages more than once  Catch Errors in all stages CONS:  More time consuming as reviews are made after every stage

The Spiral SDLC

Differences  You visit every section multiple time during this model, you will create a number of prototypes and then evaluate each of these

Pros and Cons of this model PROS:  Very secure in terms of success CONS:  Time consuming  Expensive – As lots of stages
