3. Jugs A girl wishes to measure out 4 litres of water. She has only two jugs which, when full, hold 3 litres and 5 litres respectively and have no other markings on them. Plenty of water is available from a tap. How can the girl measure out exactly 4 litres? Explain your steps clearly at each stage of the process.

4. Exercise:- A girl has an unlimited supply of water from the tap in her house. She also has two jugs and a large water tank which has a tap on it as shown. 1. The two jugs when full can hold 18 litres and 30 litres. Explain how she can measure out an exact amount of (i) 24 litres (ii) 6 litres using the jugs and the water tank. 2. Suppose the two jugs hold 25 litres and 14 litres. Explain how she can measure out (i) 8 litres (ii) 13 litres Large Water Tank

5. A solution Identify the containers as A (small) and B (large) One way of doing it is to - Fill A and pour that into B. Fill A and pour as much as possible into B. This will leave 1 litre in A Empty B Pour the 1 litre from A into B Fill A and pour that into B. There will then be 4 litres in B.
