1 John 11:35 u Heb. 5:7 u Luke 19:41 1.There are three occasion where it is stated that Jesus shed tears 2.Each of the three has its own significance & circumstance 3.These all show that he was human – had feelings 4.Isaiah foretold of his sorrow: Isa 53:3 He is despised and rejected by men, A Man of sorrows and acquainted with grief. And we hid, as it were, our faces from Him; He was despised, and we did not esteem Him.

4 Tears of Sympathy (John 11:35) A.The Context: 1.Lazarus was sick (vv. 1-2) 2.Appeal of Mary and Martha (v. 3) 3.Loved Lazarus (v. 5) 4.Lazarus died (v. 14) 5.Lord announced that Lazarus will rise again (v. 23) 6.When met Martha – much weeping (vv. 31-33) 7.Jesus groaned (angered v. 33) & troubled (v. 33) at death and its destruction 8.Took Jesus to where they laid him (v. 34) 9.Groaned within himself (v. 38)

Robertson) 2.“Wept” – shed tears a.“…shed tears' might have better conveyed the difference between the word here used and that twice employed in John 11:33 [klaioo (NT:2799)], and there properly rendered ‘weeping’ -denoting the loud wail for the dead, while that of Jesus consisted of silent tears” (Jamison, Faussett and Brown) b.Yet it was observable to those around (v. 36) 3.In sympathy for Mary and Martha (cf. vv. 31-33)

8 Tears of Anguish (Heb. 5:5-9) A.The Occasion: 1.Evidently – the garden of Gethsemane a.Matt. 26:36-45 b.Luke 22:41-46 2.Hebrew writer adds the matter of tears (v. 7) a.“This word does not mean ‘weeping,’ as the word ‘crying’ does familiarly with us. It rather means an outcry, the voice of wailing and lamentation. It is the cry for help of one who is deeply distressed, or in danger; and refers here to the ‘earnest petition’ of the Saviour when in the agony of Gethsemane or when on the cross” (Barnes) b.“’Loud crying’ describes the screams and yells of someone in extremity crying for help. ‘Tears’ running down his cheeks are visible manifestations of grief or hurt” (Garreth L. Reese)

9 Tears of Anguish (Heb. 5:5-9) A.The Occasion: B.The Reason: 1.Weeping over the prospects of his own death (v. 7) 2.As a man facing the cross – was filled with mental anguish as any human being would 3.He knew he was about the drink a bitter cup 4.Willingly did so – because of his love for fallen man – and his obedience to the Father
