2 Description of Malaria ●caused by a parasite called Plasmodium ●Infection of the red blood cells ● In 2013 an estimated 198 million cases of malaria occurred worldwide and 500,000 people died, mostly children in the African Region. ● Malaria is preventable and curable

3 History of Malaria ●Malaria has been around for thousands of years ●Around 7,000-12,000 years ago with increase in temperatures in Africa, rise in humidity creating new water sources and the start of agriculture in the Middle East and North East Africa there were several bodies of water and pools of water. This led to a favorable climate and area for breeding and transmission of malaria parasites and mosquitoes

4 Symptoms of Malaria ●Fever, Headache, and vomiting happen within 10 to 15 days after the mosquito bite. ●If not treated Malaria could become life threatening

5 Transmission of Malaria ●Malaria is transmitted through bites of infected mosquitos ●Non-immune travellers from malaria-free areas are very vulnerable to the disease when they get infected.

6 Treatments for Malaria ●Which drug you receive depends on which type of Malaria you have and where you got the mosquito bite ●Drugs for treatment include: Chloroquine, Quinine, Hydroxychloroquine (Plaquenil), Artemether and lumefantrine (Coartem), Atovaquone (Mepron), Proguanil (sold as a generic),Mefloquine,Clindamycin (Cleocin), Doxycycline.QuinineHydroxychloroquinePlaquenilCoartemMepronClindamycinCleocin
