Making copper sulfate Starter: Complete the following word equations acid + alkali → ? + ? acid + metal → ? + ? What is the test for hydrogen gas called?

Making copper sulfate Starter: Complete the following word equations acid + alkali → salt + water acid + metal → salt + hydrogen What is the test for hydrogen gas called? The squeaky pop test

Making copper sulfate Starter: Complete the following word equations magnesium + hydrochloric acid → ? + ? magnesium + ? → magnesium nitrate + ? ? + ? → magnesium sulfate + hydrogen

Making copper sulfate Starter: Complete the following word equations magnesium + hydrochloric acid → magnesium chloride + hydrogen magnesium + nitric acid → magnesium nitrate + hydrogen magnesium + sulfuric acid → magnesium sulfate + hydrogen

Making copper sulfate 1 Put 20 ml of sulfuric acid into a beaker. 2 Add a spatula of copper carbonate, stir it gently using a glass rod and look for bubbles. 3 When the reaction stops, repeat step 2. 4 Stop adding copper carbonate when no further bubbles form. 5 Filter the solution, carefully collecting the copper sulfate solution you have made in an evaporating dish. 6 Heat your solution gently over a water bath, stop when you see blue crystals forming.

To record Copper sulfate is also a salt, but this time we used a new chemical, copper carbonate, to provide the copper. When a metal carbonate reacts you get three products that are formed: metal carbonate + acid → salt + water + carbon dioxide (crystals) (evaporated) (bubbles)

To consolidate In our case we reacted copper carbonate with sulfuric acid: copper carbonate + sulfuric acid → copper sulfate + water + carbon dioxide 8B6 2 and 3 will help you to practise writing word equations for this new reaction.

Extend your chemistry Copper carbonate has the formula CuCO 3 Sulfuric acid has the formula H 2 SO 4 The balanced symbol equation for this reaction is: CuCO 3 + H 2 SO 4 → CuSO 4 + H 2 O + CO 2 See if you can write the balanced symbol equation for other metal carbonates such as CaCO 3, SrCO 3, BaCO 3 and FeCO 3. Don't forget to name the salt.

Extend your chemistry CaCO 3 + H 2 SO 4 → CaSO 4 + H 2 O + CO 2 SrCO 3 + H 2 SO 4 → SrSO 4 + H 2 O + CO 2 BaCO 3 + H 2 SO 4 → BaSO 4 + H 2 O + CO 2 FeCO 3 + H 2 SO 4 → FeSO 4 + H 2 O + CO 2
