2. Temperature – the measure of the average energy of the particles in a substance

3. In a warm drink, some of the particles have a lot of energy and are moving fast some of the particles are moving slowly with very little energy most of the particles, however, are somewhere in between so the temperature must be an average of all of that energy.

4. Why is temperature important? What is the temperature outside right now? Could I describe the temperature without numbers?

5. Activity – Three buckets of water – one very cold, one very warm, and one inbetween/medi um.

9. Temperature Scales The temperature scale used in Canada to measure temperature is the Celsius Scale (named after Anders Celsius, the Swedish scientist who invented it).

10. He used the freezing point of water as his zero (zero degrees Celsius) and the boiling point of water as 100 and divided it equally in between.

11. In this way he calibrated his thermometer.
