Outreach activities related to Particle Physics in Netherlands April 2004, H. Tiecke -Cosmic Ray Project at High Schools -High schools and particle physics -Yearly ‘open day’ -WYP 2005

High School Project to detect Cosmic Rays www.hisparc.nl At present: 5 clusters in NL, with national project manager Groningen, Utrecht, Nijmegen, Leiden, Amsterdam (each with their own leader)

At present: 10 detector stations operational (Nijmegen and Amsterdam) End 2004: 37 Nijmegen area: 6 operational +3 Amsterdam : 4 operational +12 Groningen : +4 Utrecht : +4 Leiden : +4 Project has been selected (shortlist of 6 projects) by the Altran Foundation for Innovation 2004 Award

How does a detector station look like? 2 scintillator counters + electronics

Custom produced electronics Data both detectors can be viewed and analysed Coincidence unit and oscilloscope trigger GPS system

Installation on roof of school/institute building of 2 detectors +GPS antennas Present price: 6500 euro (20% cost is scintillator)

High Schools and Particle Physics Particle Physics does not belong to the ‘obliged’ program (for final exam) Since a few years: project modern physics, initiative teachers this includes particle physics. More and more schools participate. Some teachers have participated in Cern program. Usually very difficult to fit something extra in school program. Offer experiments for high school students, contact via university Have to spent 2 x 8hrs + literature research+ measurement at present 1)Muon lifetime 2)Measure cosmic tracks in watertank more to come

Yearly national event: Science Week in october Open day NIKHEF, during that week, attracts ~ 2000 visitors Visit workshops, experiments in preparation, sparkchamber, cloudchamber + for children ‘fun lab’, very popular

‘Funlab’ A toolkit is distributed for free (printed circuit with components). After soldering (under guidance) one usually gets a ‘device’ which produces noise or flickering lights. Cloudchamber from PHYWE Always operational in NIKHEF hal Attracts a lot of interest.

Making pictures during the ‘open day’ ! Sparkchamber Always operational in NIKHEF hal Attracts a lot of interest.

Proposal in particular for particle physics: Visit schools with a mobile exhibition of cloudchamber and sparkchamber in combination with short presentations on cosmic rays. Recently Produced ‘portable’ sparkchamber for this purpose (although not specially for WYP2005) WYP2005 NNV (Dutch Physics Union) recently started organization -7 working groups formed to propose program (physics and art, primary school, secondary school activities, physics and media, physics on the marketplace, big manifestation) Will still take some time, no idea yet about funds.
