6 5E Science Instructional Model  What is it?  An aide to improve instructional effectiveness in science through a systematic approach to and use of strategies closely aligned with models of learning and educational outcomes.  5 phases:  Engagement  Exploration  Explanation  Elaboration  Evaluation

7 Importance of the 5E Instructional Model to scientific inquiry.  Students are expected to bring and evaluate preconceptions.  Students are allowed to reconstruct core concepts through continuous interactions between themselves and their environment.  Students test new conceptions applied to different situations.

8 Phase 1: Engage  This phase of the teaching model initiates the instructional task. The activity should do the following:  Make connections between past and present learning experiences  Anticipate activities and organize students’ thinking toward the learning outcomes of current activities.

9 Engage example  This part of the lesson must be interesting, motivational, and meaningful to students.  LINK TO MY GENETICS ENGAGE ACTIVITY: “WHO’S YOUR DADDY?”  Lesson design assignment: Modify a current lesson to include an engagement activity.

10 Phase 2: Explore  This phase of the teaching model provides the students with a common base of experiences within which current concepts, processes, and skills may be identified and developed.

11 Explore example  This part of the lesson should provide mental and physical experiences relative to the learning outcomes. 12 Phase 3: Explain  This phase of the teaching model focuses students’ attention on a particular aspect of their engagement and exploration experiences and provides opportunities to demonstrate their conceptual understanding, process skills, or behaviors. This phase also provides specific opportunities for teachers to introduce concepts or skills.
