Sewage Pollution What is sewage? What is sewage? Sewage refers to liquid wastes containing a mixture of human wastes and wastewater from non-industrial human activities such as bathing, washing, and cleaning. In many poor areas of the world, sewage remains untreated. It is dumped into local waterways, in the absence of practical alternatives.

…results of untreated sewage Untreated sewage poses a major risk to human health since it contains waterborne pathogens that can cause serious human illness such as - cholera - typhoid - dysentery - hepatitis A - intestinal nematode infections → as a result 1.5 millions deaths occur, and more than 7 million people suffer from those illnesses and what is even worst? Most of the victims are children below the age of 5.

Untreated sewage also destroys marine ecosystems → Researches has found out that polluted river water is harming fish's ability to reproduce by disrupting their hormonal, or endocrine, systems. → It can cause eutrofication → Sewage can increase the turbidity and amount of suspended sediments. → Dramatic impact of the fish overall population

Reducing Sewage Pollution We should make it our priority to fix the problem. Take action as individuals.

Reducing Sewage Pollution More specifically, we should…  Get going on fixing outdated municipal water treatment plants.  Help localities set up programs that ensure septic system maintenance and monitoring.  Fix unsuitable pipes like: -Cracked Pipes -Broken Pipes -Inspection Holes -Direct connection -Low-lying Gullies  Conserve water

Treatment of Sewage Water If the sewage water is treated before being released into rivers, most of the problems related to pollution would be solved. Pretreatment -separating materials like oils, greases, gravel and sand from the polluted water.
