Cardiovascular Disease (Heart Disease) It generally refers to conditions that involve narrowed or blocked blood vessels that can lead to a heart attack, chest pain (angina) or stroke.

Correlation between Smoking and Heart Disease Nicotine narrows the blood vessels causing an increase in blood pressure and heart rate. Carbon monoxide competes with oxygen in the red blood cells so there is less oxygen carried to the heart. Smoking is the 2 nd leading cause of heart disease. Smokers are 2 to 4 times more likely to get heart disease than nonsmokers.

2010 About every 25 seconds, a victim will have a coronary event. About every minute someone will die from a coronary attack. There were a total of 785,000 coronary attacks.

Mortality Rates About 20% of all deaths from heart disease in the U.S are correlated to cigarette smoking each year. More than 930,000 victims each year. 1 billion tobacco related deaths in the 21 st century. Smoking causes more deaths each year than all of these combined: o Human immunodeficiency virus (HIV) o Illegal drug use o Alcohol use o Motor vehicle injuries o Firearm-related incidents By 2030, tobacco related deaths are expected to increase to more than 8 million deaths a year.

According to the 2010 US Surgeon General’s report, about 443,000 deaths were tobacco-related.

Conclusion Cigarette smoking is a major cause of cardiovascular disease. Smokers are more likely to get heart disease than nonsmokers. Smoking accounts for about 1/5 of all deaths from heart disease in the United States.
