4. The Obligations of the Government (day 2 start) Think about what it really means to submit to the government. Is it important for a Christian to submit to the government? Is this “government” only political? Or can we say it also works for other ruling bodies? (like teachers, bosses, principles.)

5. The Bible greatly emphasizes that believer’s are obligated to obey and submit to those who rule over them. Submission is more than the recognition of government’s sphere of authority. It is an attitude of the heart. Look at 1 Peter 2:13-17 What does that tell us about submitting? How can a Christian submit to a bad leader? - The bible always discusses submission and obedience to government in the context of God’s authority structure + God is sovereign + The state (government) is simply under is Instruction. Once the state violates a CLEAR BIBICAL COMMAND and the believer has exhausted every avenue of appeal then they must obey the higher authority (God).

6. Do not think that the Bible commands us to simply submit to our gov’t. We still can attempt to change our government. There are two activities to press the government to change. - Evangelism: We should evangelize to our government officials. (it will be amazing to think of true believers leading don’t you think?) - Participation: We should’t avoid participating in government. It is not a sin to be a politician. 10. III. Conclusion (Day 4) America has changed over the years. A nation that at least considered God has slowly lost its moral compass. Martian Luther stood before the Council of Worms in 1521. He was there to defend his views of salvation by grace alone. There he stated “Here I stand; I can do no other.” This was an example of declaring your faith and freedom to God. The Protestant Reformation (started by Luther ) brought in a new idea of personal liberty. Thus freeing us from the idea that we need a priest in order to be close to God and to understand Him. This personal liberty was in Jefferson’s words, an “unalienable right”

11. Unalienable Right This is a right that a government cannot give because it is not the governments to give. It is a gift of God. The Reformation with father many of the political and social thinking behind American independence.

12. Tradition of Dissent A 2 nd major Christian influence on American government and history was the tradition of dissent. Many religious groups came to the New World because they opposed the religious tyranny of the Old World. (examples: Pilgrims, Puritans, Quakers, ect) The right of dissent was therefore closely associated with personal liberty and freedom of conscience, matters important for the practice and propagation of the Christa faith. (If you are not aware of what dissent means look it up.)

For example: The Great Awakening swept through the country and left revitalized, growing churches and transformed lives in its wake. This reached every colonial society and in the end prompted Christians to establish colleges that helped reach the frontier.

14. Though it is easy to think that all of American leaders where Christian (even if they say they are) but they aren’t. Not everyone who says they are Christian means that they truly understand what that means. If you have Christ in your life then people who do not even know you should see Him shining through you. If you have Christ as the center of your life your self does not matter. Christian citizens of the world must realize that liberties dearest to Christians must be valued, protected and used for the glory of Christ. (It is your generation that can make a difference.)

18. Electing the Executive Presidential system: The people directly elect the president. -Benefit of this system is the president’s accountability to the people. - Drawback is inefficiency. Also differences in policy between branches can created a stalemate that slows down the process of governing.

19. Parliamentary system: This system is widely practice around the world. In this system the legislative and executive branch are inseparably linked. The Parliamentary system difference from the presidential in that the people elect their representatives by voting. Who ever wins by votes is the representative for that district. The Majority party in the legislature then appoints the executive head (The Prime Minister). The dangers: the executive branch is susceptible to domination by the legislative branch. The possibilities for tyranny also increases. Examples are Great Britain, France, Japan, and Indonesia.
