7 Maple Syrup Industry New Hampshire is the leading producer of maple syrup in the United States. Close to 90,000 gallons of maple syrup is made in NH every year. It takes about 40 gallons of sap to make 1 gallon of maple syrup. What is sap? Sugaring time is only 4-6 weeks long. Mid-February through mid-April

8 How Maple Syrup is Made:

9 Lumber Industry Almost 85% of New Hampshire’s land is covered with trees. Over 16,000 people in NH work for the lumber industry. These people are called loggers. Loggers can work by cutting down trees and transporting them or they can work in sawmills.

10 Where does the lumber come from? Most of New Hampshire’s lumber comes from Coos County, Grafton County, and Carroll County. Why do you think that is?

11 Uses for Lumber: Most popular use in NH: furniture Wood to build houses Paper Transportation goods Buckets, barrels, etc.

12 Manufacturing Industry Manufacturing is making products by hand or machinery. Over ¼ of NH citizens work in factories. Approximately 120,000 people. Private craftspeople are included in the manufacturing industry. A craftsperson is someone who is skilled at making a particular product.

13 Where are all the factories? Most of New Hampshire’s factories are in the southern counties. Why?
