Cells Lab

Cells Lab 1/7/15 Key Question: What organelles do different cells have in common? Initial Thoughts:

Evidence: Microscope Observations Everyone must first find and focus the letter “e” on 40x (low power) and then draw it at100x (medium power). 3 specimens: Onion cells without stain, Onion cells with Iodine stain Cheek cells without stain Cheek cells with Methanol Blue Stain/Lugol’s One microorganism of your choice: amoeba, paramecium, euglena Optional: volvox, spirogyra

Analysis Q’s 1.Explain what evidence you found that the human body is made up of cells. 2.Compare the 3 cells you have just observed. a)What structures do they have in common? Explain. b)How are the cells different? 3.How did the cells look before and after staining? Be specific. Hint: Where there structures you couldn’t see without the stain?

Summary In a well developed paragraph: –What did you think before about the correct way to use a microscope? (look back at your initial thoughts) –What did you learn the correct way to use a microscope? Be specific! (look back at your evidence section). –What evidence do you have that you learned this? –Further Thoughts Make sure this is thoughtful and thorough.

Reflection Write a Facebook status about the microscope cells lab you did in class.
