Hazard Judgement

Exposure Pathways How can workers be exposed from a process? What are the exposure pathways?

Exposure Pathways

Similar Exposure Groups (SEG) For each agent and route of exposure, which workers do you think have similar exposure levels or intensities? For example, for noise exposure, which workers would you group together? For chromium exposure, which workers would you group together? Did the class agree on the SEGs? Why or why not?

Exposure Rating Exposure ratings are used to evaluate the relative intensity of the exposure A common qualitative approach uses a scale of 0-4 with 0 being the lowest exposure and 4 being the highest exposure

Health Effect Rating Health effect ratings are used to evaluate the relative severity of the health outcome following exposure A common approach uses a scale of 0- 4 with 0 being the least severe and 4 being the most severe health outcome

Health Effect Rating Scheme (Mulhausen and Damiano, 1998)

Uncertainty How much uncertainty is there? Is the uncertainty in the exposure rating? health effect rating? both?

Exposure Rating / Health Effect Rating Chart Health Effect Rating Exposure Rating 1243 1 3 2 4 0

Exposure Rating / Health Effect Rating Chart acceptable uncertain unacceptable

Exposure Rating Scheme (quantitative information) (Mulhausen and Damiano, 1998)

Hazard Judgement Why do different people assign different ratings? For those exposures that are acceptable, what is the next step? For those exposures that are uncertain, what is the next step? For those exposures that are unacceptable, what is the next step?

Summary Exposure pathways describe the pathways which an agent travels from the process to the workplace and from the workplace to the worker Routes of exposure describe how an agent enters the body or is absorbed by the body Exposure and health ratings provide a system for prioritizing hazards for interventions or further information gathering
