How does rain happen? Why does water evaporate? Why does it snow when its cold? LANL Science Outreach 10.10.2014

Molecule

Atom

Particle PN e

H20H20 Covalent Bond = sharing electrons

Many Phases of Water

Water cycle

How do rainbows form? LANL Science Outreach 10.10.2014

What is light?

What are colors? Wavelength

Reflection and Refraction The angle of refraction depends on the material’s index of refraction. n = c/v c = spd of light in vacuum, v = spd of light in medium For example n H20 (589nm) = 1.333 BUT n also depends on the wavelength of the light That means that when a mixture of different wavelengths of light goes into water, each photon of different wavelength gets refracted at a slightly different angle

What about rainbows?

Who wants to do some science?

Activities 1.Wave demonstration - broomstick 2.Laser pointer refraction 3.Laser pointer total internal reflection 4.Water bottle rainbow
