In your notebook Scientific Method Question: Why is the scientific Method important?

Understanding Science The scientific process

Science is – the investigation of the NATURAL world – the new information that results from those investigations. Science is in our everyday lives and jobs… firefighters, police officers, teachers, and even the clerk at 711 use science in their jobs.

Three Main Branches of Science Earth Science: The study of the living things. Also known as biology This includes – Plants – Animals – Bacteria – humans Physical Science The study of matter and energy Physics (forces and motion…) Chemistry (chemicals…) --There are tons of different areas of science, so it has been broken down into 3 main branches… The study of the Earth. This includes – Rocks – Soil – Oceans – atmosphere Life Science

Scientific Method Ask Questions Make observations “ I wonder…” Do your research Find out more about the subject Understand the vocabulary Hypothesis “I think that ….will happen, because…” This is NOT a guess… it is based on the research that you did. Experiment Keep CONTROL Test at least 3 times Document EVERYTHING!!! Analyze What happened? Why did that happen? Was your hypothesis supported or not? Draw conclusions Think…infer…what did you decide or conclude from this experiment? Communicate Explain your purpose, research, experiment and data.

Qualitative observation Describe using your senses. Quantitative observation Measurable!

Theory vs. Law Scientific Theory NOT an untested idea… Explanation of observations or events. This explanation is based on KNOWLEDGE that was gained from MANY observations and investigations. Example: The theory of plate tectonics explains how Earth’s crust moves and why earthquakes occur. NOT an untested idea… Explanation of observations or events. This explanation is based on KNOWLEDGE that was gained from MANY observations and investigations. Example: The theory of plate tectonics explains how Earth’s crust moves and why earthquakes occur. Scientific Law This is a RULE that describes a PATTERN in nature. States that an event will occur…no matter what. Example: Newton’s Law of gravitational force.. What goes up, WILL come down. This is a RULE that describes a PATTERN in nature. States that an event will occur…no matter what. Example: Newton’s Law of gravitational force.. What goes up, WILL come down. Explains WHY something happens… States only that it will or wont happen… not WHY something occurs. Scientific Theory Scientific LAW BUT

sciencehypothesisinference observation qualitative observation quantitative observation * Scientific theory*scientific law Vocabulary: Scientific Process Directions: 1- Get 9 sticky notes. 2- write one vocabulary word on each of the sticky notes. 3- stick them to the page, in your interactive notebook. 4- under each one, write the definition of the word. * Indicates word specifically for advanced class

½ sheet homework 1- What is science? 2- How would the following people use science, everyday? *Firefighter, *Gardener 3- What are the 3 main branches of science? 4- Draw a triple venn/ bubble to compare the 3 branches. 5- What are the steps of the scientific process? 6- Is it important to follow the steps in a certain order? Why? 7- write 3 qualitative, 3 quantitative observations, and 1 inference for this picture.
