2. Why the Education Program? Los Angeles Southwest College is currently one of the ONLY community colleges in the Los Angeles Community College District offering a program in Education. Students can take classes to earn an AA degree and transfer into a two-year blended undergraduate/credential program. Students can also enroll in the UTF program which provides support to students interested in teaching. Students can earn a Teacher Assistant Certificate of Achievement

3. What the Education Program has to offer? The core classes of the Education program are CSU transferable, and provide students with a strong foundation for beginning studies in Education. Education 1 (3 units) Education 203 (3 units) Education 205 (3 units) Education 207 (3 units)

4. Overview of Core Classes EDUC 01: Introduction to Teaching Lays a foundation in the Education field and introduces students to Educational history and theory. EDUC 203: Education in American Society Focuses on issues in urban education EDUC 205: Diversity in Education A brand new course which focuses on teaching and working with diverse populations. (EDUC 01 is an advisory) EDUC 207: Literacy Instruction A brand new course which focuses on teaching K-12 reading and writing skills and implementing literacy across content areas (EDUC 01 is a prerequisite)

Teacher Assistant Certificate of Achievement You can earn a TA Certificate of Achievement by taking the following classes, totaling 20 units: Education 01 (3 units) Education 203 (3 units) Child Development 1 (3 units) English 28 (3 units) Math 115 (5 units) Education 385- Directed Study(3 units)

Building your Portfolio The Education classes not only help you earn units, but help you learn how to: Create and teach lesson plans Gain experience in conducting field work through teacher interviews/classroom observations Develop and design school plans and models Engage in meaningful research

8. What is UTF? The goal of the Urban Teacher Fellowship (UTF) is to prepare youth and adults from low-income communities for employment in the afterschool workforce, and create career pathways leading to teaching careers in Los Angeles County. The program begins by training participants to work in afterschool programs, using this employment as a source of financial support and as a career-linked learning lab for participants as they move through a multi-year sequence from Associate's to Bachelor's degrees and ultimately to a teaching credential.

12. Student California Teacher Association Student CTA strives to be a recognized and collaborative organization that inspires and fosters exemplary future leaders in education. SCTA in LASC is student run and lead. Students hold leadership positions and assist with icebreakers during workshops. Organize events on campus. Attend annual conference and network.

14. UTF Partners The program includes participation by four pairs of Los Angeles County community colleges, CSU’s. Support from LAUSD and most major area school districts and afterschool employers. Recognized for its potential as a model to address the looming teacher shortage in California, UTF’s model has served as the major source of inspiration for the statewide California Teacher Pathway strategy.California Teacher Pathway

The California Teacher Pathway’s (CTP) mission is to cultivate a systemic, publicly-funded pathway that will create a local, diverse, and experienced corps of “homegrown” teachers who are more reflective of the diversity within California’s communities and committed to teaching in the communities in which they have lived and worked.

16. CTP Thriving The CA Teacher Pathway (CTP) wants to inspire young people to become teachers and create leaders in the community. We currently have over 700 CTP Fellows in the pipeline at various points in their educational career.
