1 Transition Day April 3, 2013

2 What is AΩA?  Alpha Omega Alpha  National medical honor society that recognizes and advocates for scholarly attainment and moral purpose in medicine  120 chapters throughout the United States

3 Dedicated to the belief that in the profession of medicine we will improve care for all patients by:  recognizing high educational achievement  honoring gifted teaching  encouraging the development of leaders in academia and the community  supporting the ideals of humanism, and  promoting service to others

4 How Are Members Chosen?  The top 25 percent of a medical school class is eligible for nomination to the society, with up to 16 percent elected based on leadership, character, community service, and professionalism.

5 How Are Members Chosen?  Each chapter may also elect each year up to 3 residents/fellows and 1-2 faculty members who embody the values of AΩA.  Honorary membership may be awarded to physicians and scientists who have made significant contributions to medicine.

6 University of Minnesota AΩA AΩA Chapter of Minnesota Junior AΩA members  Elected in April of Year 3 (approximately 15 members)  Assume leadership of Alpha Chapter of Minnesota

7 Senior AΩA members  Elected in fall of Year 4 to complete the chapter

8 Election Criteria  Year 1 & 2 grades  USMLE Step 1 Score  Clinical rotation grades  Must have 1 required rotations completed by end of period 5.  Essay

9 Essays?  Our chapter’s unique way of identifying the society’s goals of scholarship, leadership, professionalism, and service  Essays de-identified, scored by current AΩA student and faculty members

10 Scholarships/Awards Each year, AΩA grants more than $575,000 to medical students and faculty.
