Service User Involvement in the Education and Training Committee Psychosis CAG

Anne Kirby, Psychosis CAG2 What does the Psychosis Clinical Academic Group (CAG) do? The Psychosis CAG is a management department which delivers SLaM’s services for people with a diagnosis of psychosis (e.g. schizophrenia and schizoaffective disorder.) The CAG covers Croydon, Lambeth Southwark and Lewisham.

Anne Kirby, Psychosis CAG3 What does the CAG do? The CAG brings together:  Clinical services (e.g. such as the Inpatient Wards at the Maudsley Hospital. Staff in these services include Doctors, Nurses, Occupational Therapists and Psychologists),  Research (e.g. studies into medications and therapies for schizophrenia)  Education of the service staff (e.g. training in use of medication or family therapy)

Anne Kirby, Psychosis CAG4 Why did SLaM set up CAGs? Having services, research and education in one management group means that education and research are planned together to help improve services for the people who use them. For example, an OT may notice that people they provide care to seem to find it easier to give up smoking when receiving a particular sort of therapy and decide to study whether that therapy does help people give up smoking.

Anne Kirby, Psychosis CAG5 Clinical + research + education That’s interesting, the last six people who received this new therapy gave up smoking within 6 weeks. Would you feel like studying that? I’ve looked into it and this therapy should be prescribed for people with a diagnosis of schizophrenia who smoke. We’d better train the staff! That’s great I’ve given up smoking at last thanks to the therapy my nurse recommended – she really knew her stuff!

Anne Kirby, Psychosis CAG6 Vision of the Education & Training Committee  To make sure that staff and service users ideas lead to research being undertaken.  To make sure that findings from research treatments such as occupational therapies are used in care.  To make sure that education helps staff use the most effective approaches.

Anne Kirby, Psychosis CAG7 Aims of the Committee The Committee will have a the following responsibilities:  Managing the CAG annual training plan, monitoring how effective it is and changing the plan as appropriate  Receive reports on the training implications of CAG, approved Research Projects and their findings and where needed adjust the plan.  Making decisions on long course (university courses such as Masters programmes) application process for the CAG.  Advising the CAG of the Escalation Procedure (taking concerns higher in the CAG) regarding education and training issues/disputes.  Sharing Education and Training Information with staff and the Executive  Managing the training budget  Monitoring mandatory training (training that staff must do) and development training and escalate concerns in regard to the up-take of training.  Receiving information on training attendance and sharing this with the CAG.  Sharing information on new developments within Education & Training, available training and signposting staff to training pathways.  Receive updates from Kings Healthcare Partners Education & Training Committee.  Liaise with the higher education providers, especially in terms of professional training with placements (e.g. Medicine & Nursing).  Overseeing funding of training with commissioners

Anne Kirby, Psychosis CAG8 What happens in the meeting? The meeting discusses the following items:  Training plan  Spending  Long Course applications  Funding for education and training  Problems  Education supporting research
