Solve. 1. n + 9 = 37 2. 6 = n – 20 3. 11n = 121 4. 7 = n = 28 n = 26 n = 11 n = 49 n7n7 Do Now

3/10/15 8-1 A Points, Lines, & Planes

point- an EXACT location that has no size – Named by a capital letter

line- a straight path that has no thickness and extends forever – Named by 2 points on the line

plane- a flat surface that has no thickness and extends forever – Named by 3 points on the plane that are not on the same line

Example 1 A. three points M, N, and P Five points are labeled: points M, N, P, Q, and R. B. two lines PR and NR You can also write RP and RN.

Example 2 C. a point shared by two lines point R D. a plane plane QRM Use any three points in the plane that are not on the same line. Write the three points in any order. Point R is a point on PR and NR.

line segment- a part of a line made up of two endpoints and ALL points between them – Named by its endpoints

ray- a part of a line that starts at an endpoint and extends forever in one direction – Named by the endpoint first and followed by another point on the ray

Example 3 A. three different line segments B. three ways to name the line You can also write BA, CB, and CA. AB, BC, and AC You can also write BA, CB, and CA. AB, BC, and AC C A B

Example 4 C. six rays D. another name for ray AB A is still the endpoint. C is another point on the ray. AB, AC, BC, CB, CA, and BA AC C A B

Use the diagram to name each geometric figure. 1. three points 2. two lines 3. a point shared by a line and a ray 4. a plane Possible answer: A, B, C Possible answer: F Possible answer: plane AEC Possible answer: AD, CE Exit Ticket

1. Use the diagram to name three points. A. B. C. D. A, B, C A B C D

2. Use the diagram to name two lines. A. B. C. D. A, B A B C D

3. Use the diagram to name a point shared by a line and a ray. A. A B. B C. C D. D A B C D

4. Use the diagram to name a plane. A. plane PQT B. plane PT C. plane UTR D. plane QT T Q R U P S
