1 Electrolytic Cells Chemistry Chapter 19 E

2 Electrolytic Cells Electrolytic cell: Electrolysis:
Electricity is used to cause a redox reaction to occur in electrochemical cell Electrolysis: Electric current is used to cause a redox reaction

3 Differences Differences between voltaic cell and electrolytic cell:
Anode and cathode of electrolytic cell connected to a battery; voltaic cell is a source of current Electrolytic cells components produce nonspontaneous redox reaction Voltaic cells produce spontaneous redox reaction

4 Electroplating Definition:
Electrolytic process where a metal ion is reduced and deposited on a surface Metal is removed from anode, goes into solution, and is deposited at cathode Contains: Solution with ion of plating metal Object to be coated at cathode Anode is piece of plating metal

5 Rechargeable Cells Definition: Common example:
Works as electrolytic cell part of the time Works as voltaic cell part of the time Common example: Car battery (lead battery)

6 Electrode Potential Reduction potential: Electrode potential:
Tendency for reduction half reaction to occur at an electrode Electrode potential: Difference in potential between electrode and its electrolyte solution Measured in volts Relative reduction potential measured by comparing with standard hydrogen electrode (SHE)

7 Predicting Spontenaity
Eocell calculated: Eocell = Eocathode - Eoanode If Eocell is positive, reaction is spontaneous Reaction with lowest standard reduction potential is the anode
